Slow Firestick Performance or Storage Issues
Fix slow performance caused by low storage, outdated software, or older Firestick models.
Quick fix: slow Firestick or low storage
If your Firestick feels slow, freezes, or apps keep closing, it is usually caused by low storage, too many apps running, or the device needing a restart.
This takes about 5 to 15 minutes.
Before you start
- If possible, do these steps when nobody is actively watching.
- If you are using a VPN, you can leave it on for these steps.
Step 1
Restart your Firestick
- Hold Select and Play/Pause for 5 seconds.
- Wait for the Firestick to restart.
Step 2
Force close and reset the app (recommended)
If the issue only happens in one app, reset it first:
Step 3
Free up storage space
Low storage causes slow menus, buffering, and random app crashes.
Do this next:
Aim to keep at least 1 GB free if possible.
Step 4
Check for Firestick software updates
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About.
- Select Check for Updates.
- Install any available updates and restart.
If it is still slow
Try these next:
Older Firesticks (especially Fire TV Stick Lite) can struggle with heavy streaming.
Older devices can also feel like your internet is slow, even when your Wi‑Fi is fine.
If possible, run a speed test on your Firestick and compare it with another device on the same Wi‑Fi (for example, a phone or laptop in the same room).
If other devices are fast but the Firestick is slow, it may be worth upgrading to a newer Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max for a smoother experience.
- Check your internet speed: Check Internet Speed (Analiti Test)
- If you only see issues during playback: VLC Player Playback Fix
